Redesiging the Inpatient Acute Care Call Light Communication System

CALL-LIGHT REDESIGN

At the Henry Mayo Hospital, there are significant barriers in the call-light system that makes the triage assessment of patient needs inefficient, negatively impacting the quality of care and patient satisfaction. Patients accidentally request for their Registered Nurses to provide care that the Patient Care Assistant has the responsibility to provide, and vice versa. This has created frustration among nurses that patients with slight annoyances take time away from those requiring urgent care. Carter designed a device that would inform nurses & care assistants with specific requests using a GUI coded in Python and run on a Raspberry Pi chip, hosted in e-ink touchscreen technology. The system would provide more organization for facilitating patient-to-nurse communication.

LOW COST KNEE BRACE

This 3D prototype is a low-cost knee brace option for workers that suffer from osteoarthritis. For most patients, a knee brace is typically covered by healthcare insurance providers, with a medical device copay or coinsurance of about 20%. However, there are restrictions that limit the quality of brace that patients can receive. Carter’s device was intended to target middle-to-lower class workers that cannot afford higher-scale braces or contain inadequate options provided by insurance. It is a low-cost, comfortable, and customizable alternative to the pre-sized, stiff, and uncomfortable options that insurance companies provide. Carter designed a new unloader knee brace to shift stress within the knee from the affected side to the healthier side of the joint.

T-Can: Reimagining the Paint Can

Paint cans are a pain to use. The handle crushes your fingers, the lid is way too difficult to open, and the paint spills all over the can when poured. Additionally, materials used to make paint cans are rarely environmentally friendly. Kusal decided to redesign the paint can to make it more user-friendly and environmentally conscious.

I decided to encourage more families into installing solar panels by researching why families in Santa Clarita stray from solar energy and tackling misinformation about solar panels.
